The Ice Bucket Challenge and How it Helped!

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge took the internet by storm in the summer of 2014 and was soon one of the most popular viral trends around the world! With participation by those fighting ALS, those affected by the disease, as well as celebrities, athletes and even world leaders, the Ice Bucket Challenge did more for raising awareness about ALS than any prior campaign. However, many skeptics asked if the activity actually helped the fight against ALS, and with the help of some very encouraging statistics, we can answer that question with an emphatic, YES!

According to the ALS Association, donations related to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge — the social media-powered video challenge, where participants pour a bucket of ice water on their heads and dare others to donate — have topped $100 million in August alone. That’s a 3,500% increase from the $2.8 million that the ALS Association raised during the same time period last year. More than three million people have donated, the association says. On a local level, we have certainly seen this increased awareness lead to a rise in both monetary donations and volunteering. Hearts for ALS New York has seen the affect that the viral campaign has had on the public as we were recently invited to talk about the Ice Bucket Challenge on a local news program in Rochester, New York. Hearts for ALS New York President, Pam Dunlap, and one of our pALS, Mike Dugan, visited the set of Good Day Rochester to talk with Adam Chodak about the challenge, how it has helped, and they even participated in their own edition of the challenge (videos are located below!).
